Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

One Moment of Distraction

April 28, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

There is never a moment when the purity of our commitment is not being tested. Every conversation we have, every activity we engage in, and every thought we entertain presents a choice: we can stand firm on the authority of God’s Word or allow Satan to encroach on our lives. None of us are above temptation or reproach, and every day is a battle for our heart and soul (James 1:14-15).

One little crack, one moment of distraction, can not only lose the battle but cost us the war. We must always be diligent to guard against any compromise (1 Peter 5:8-9; Proverbs 4:23). Never give the devil a foothold in your life (Ephesians 4:26-27). Give him an inch and he will take a mile. Give him a mile and your witness for Christ will be annihilated.

The Cross

April 21, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

When was the last time you contemplated the cross of Christ? We love to think about and glory in the resurrection of Jesus and all that it implies, but we are less comfortable thinking about the cross. Of course, there could have been no resurrection except for the cross. Our sanitized Sunday School versions of Christ’s death tend to hide the horrors of the crucifixion.

On top of the slow suffocation of hanging nailed to a tree, Jesus first suffered an intense and brutal beating at the hands of men trained to keep someone a breath away from their death. The horror of the beatings and crucifixion of Christ are but a shadow of the pain we cause our holy God every time we sin against Him.

Be Humble

April 7, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

It’s not easy to be humble. I don’t mean the humility that refrains from boasting about one’s accomplishments, but the humility that comes from recognizing how helpless and utterly dependent we are on God. In Western culture, it is a virtue to be self-reliant. We men especially do not like to ask for help, although I see an increasing number of women afflicted with the same malady. We like to think we can handle whatever comes our way and can figure out how to solve our problems.

But that’s not humility; it’s a manifestation of pride. What’s true is we can do nothing without Christ (John 15:5). We can’t breathe, think, talk or act except for the abilities He provides. While we like to think of ourselves as self-sufficient, without God, we are nothing but deficient (Romans 3:23; 2 Corinthians 3:5).

Unstained

March 31, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

There are many parallels we can draw between the Biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:1-29) and our modern culture. The people in those cities were unrepentant in their engagement in sexual sins. That characteristic is prevalent across the globe today. People not only consider sexual sins normal, but they celebrate them, much like they did in those wicked cities of old.

It would be easy to spend this entire article digging into this point alone, but there is much written about that, and I am certain you’ve heard it all before. What I want to focus on is the lifestyle of Lot. Day after day he lived among the worst kinds of debauchery and perversion, yet kept himself unstained by it (2 Peter 2:4-10). The people of those cities recognized Lot was different, and they despised him for it (Genesis 19:9). He set a great example for us to follow.

Bless the Lord

March 27, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

We live in a noisy world and there is no end to things clamoring for our attention (Ecclesiastes 1:8). It’s all too easy to become distracted and even caught up in the cares of this world (Mark 4:18-19). Of all the things we concern ourselves with, the one that is most important is what most often gets pushed aside. We consume our thoughts with our temporal and immediate circumstances instead of focusing our attention on the eternal glory of our God.

While we often pray for the Lord to bless us, how often do we bless the Lord? There is nothing worth having more than Jesus, and there is no problem beyond His ability to solve (Jeremiah 32:17). The Lord is the only One worthy of our praise, and the only object deserving of our attention (Revelation 4:11).
