Hypocrisy Is Useless

Hypocrisy is useless. After all, who do you think you’re fooling? God knows your innermost thoughts. (Psalm 139:1-4; Jeremiah 17:10) You can hide nothing from Him. (Psalm 139:7-12; Proverbs 15:3) To be a hypocrite, then, means you are living your life for someone besides the Lord. And we know that is the most futile thing you can do.

Hypocrisy is only pandering to fellow sinners in hopes they may esteem you as better than themselves. You are the same as them, and perhaps a little worse because you refuse to believe that truth. That is the height of arrogance and pride. Both are detestable to our King. (Proverbs 16:5; James 4:6) So, what is the point of being a hypocrite?

Man of Sorrows

True disciples of Jesus seek to live a life that looks just like Jesus. Indeed, God’s Word commands us to walk just as Jesus walked, to live just as He did. (1 John 2:6; Ephesians 5:1-2) And yet somewhere along the line we got the idea that Jesus calls us to be happy. Jesus was called the Man of Sorrows. (Isaiah 53:3) Does that sound like He was living a life of happiness, health, and wealth?

Any preacher promising that Jesus wants you to live your best life now is ignorant of what the Word of God teaches. Jesus came to suffer and also promised us we would suffer in this life. (Isaiah 53:4-5; John 16:33; 2 Timothy 3:12) Following Jesus is about obedience, not autonomy; sacrifice, not accumulation. Our Lord promised to give us life to the fullest, but we won’t find that fullness until we reign with Him in His eternal Kingdom. (John 10:10; Revelation 22:1-5)

Useless

Everything we do that is not for God is useless. No matter how noble or great our endeavors and intentions might appear, they are all futile. (Ecclesiastes 1:2-3; Psalm 127:1) No task done for any reason besides the glory of God is worth anything. (1 Corinthians 10:31; Colossians 3:17) But for glorifying God, we are useless beings doing useless activities. Except for Christ, there is no reason for any of us to live. (Philippians 1:21; Acts 17:28)

It is only when we do things for the glory of God that they have any value and, by extension, give value to us. The whole point of Heaven is to spend eternity glorifying God. (Revelation 7:9-12; Revelation 5:11-13) If that’s the plan for eternity, shouldn’t it be how we spend our lives in the here and now?

Are You Doing All You Can?

Thinking about my walk with Christ, a chilling question came to mind: “Are you doing all you can?” What if that’s the question the Lord asks of me each day? What if, when we meet Him at last, He asks, “Did you do all you could for me? Did you make the most of every opportunity I gave you? Did you maximize the one life entrusted to you for my Father’s glory?”

To be certain, my response would be inadequate. I’m not doing all I can. I am too focused on my needs and desires and waste hours on things that don’t build the Kingdom and do little to further my walk with Christ. This isn’t the way He calls us to live. (Colossians 3:17; 1 Corinthians 10:31)

Our Father

God is our Father, and as such, we must be careful how we represent the holy and impartial Judge in our brief time on earth. We must do nothing to bring shame to His name (Matthew 5:16), dishonor His Word (Psalm 119:9), or grieve His Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 4:30) We are to live in a constant state of reverence and awe towards Him. (1 Peter 1:17). Some of us have wonderful human fathers, and others of us have one who was anything but.

Too many have never known their father. No matter what kind of physical father you have, your spiritual Father in Heaven is everything you ever wanted a father to be and so much more. The Lord grafts everyone who confesses Jesus as Lord and believes in Him as Savior into the family of God. The God of the Universe is now your Father and forever will be.
