Fear of Dying

The fear of dying is one of the top two fears afflicting people. Some research states it is the most common fear, while other studies place it second behind public speaking. I couldn’t find any concrete numbers detailing what percentage of Christians fear death, but over the years, I have heard more than a few believers express a fear of dying.

That’s a little hard for me to get my head around because true followers of Christ want nothing more than to spend eternity with Him. We can’t do that until we die. To my mind, it is irrational for someone who believes in the resurrection of Jesus to have any fear of dying. We might fear the circumstances that lead to our death, but dying itself should fill us with nothing but hope and joy (1 Corinthians 15:54-57; Philippians 1:21-23).

Thank God for Your Salvation

How often do you thank God for your salvation? If you are like me, it isn’t often enough. Sometimes in prayer, I will get overwhelmed when I think of all the Lord has done on my behalf. All the blessings, all the battles won, all the moments that have no other explanation apart from Him-all of those combined don’t come close to the incredible gift of His salvation.

Where would you be without the love of Christ? Without Him, this life would be meaningless and unbearable. Without Him, we have no hope for the future and no purpose in life (Ephesians 2:11-12). Yet we go through day after day without thanking Him for His priceless and matchless gift (2 Corinthians 9:15).

Choose Whom You Will Worship

Every day, you must choose whom you will worship (Joshua 24:15). There is the bigger picture about whether you will worship the one true God or pursue some false religion. Then there are the little decisions you make every day. With each choice, you will side with God or comport with the enemy.

If we don’t develop the conscious discipline and habit of thinking this way, we are going to lose more battles than we’ll win. It’s easier to sin than to pursue holiness. We prefer to live the way we want to instead of following the narrow path that leads to eternal life in Jesus (Matthew 7:13-14).

Victory Through Persecution

As we prepare for certain persecution in the not-so-distant future, we must learn all we can about what the scriptures have to say about this. One such passage is Romans 5:3-4, where Paul outlines the progression we go through to achieve victory through persecution: “And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.”

I exhort you to commit the passage to memory for its encouragement. As we anticipate a day when owning a Bible may be illegal, we should all be memorizing as much scripture as possible. Do not be lazy or naïve in thinking that will never be a reality where you live. God’s Word tells us the days will only grow darker (2 Timothy 3:1-5), so we must prepare before it is too late.

Long-Distance Eyes

Are you feeling unsteady these days? It’s easy to feel disillusioned by everything you thought you knew when it smacks up against reality. There is so much discontent, fear, hatred, and uncertainty in our world that it takes everything we’ve got to not allow it to swallow us whole. It can be especially disconcerting for those of us who profess to trust Christ to provide everything we need, yet still have to live in a world that is coming apart at the seams.

How can we hold fast to our faith when evil seems to win victory after victory? It’s easy to lose hope when our focus is on the here and now. Instead of eyes of immediacy, we need long-distance eyes to look beyond our current circumstances and into the eternal life that waits for us.
