Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

1 Thessalonians

Stamp Eternity on My Eyes

September 23, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

The great preacher, Jonathan Edwards, is credited with the quote, “Lord, stamp eternity on my eyeballs.” Whether he said those exact words, his commitment to living with an eternal perspective is evident in his preaching and many of his famous resolutions. This describes how we should live every day of our lives. There is nothing on earth worthy of our attention.

Nothing here lasts, and we’ll take nothing from this place when we leave (1 Timothy 6:7). Our every thought, word, and deed should be with our eyes toward Heaven. Think of how your life might change if you decide to pray with Edwards, “Lord stamp eternity on my eyes.” I believe such a prayer is consistent with the teaching of the New Testament and worthy of our consideration.

What Can You Do?

August 19, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

What can you do about the increasing evil that is penetrating every corner of our world? To be realistic and blunt, not much. The fall of this world was a foregone certainty before the Lord spoke the first word to create it all (Isaiah 46:9-10). None of what is transpiring is surprising to God. Every bit is part of His mysterious but sovereign plan (Ephesians 1:11-12). I don’t get it.

This isn’t in any way how I would write this grand story. Then again, I am so obviously not God. My “perfect plan” would fall apart within seconds. No, that’s too long; it would immediately fail because I am not omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, or omnibenevolent. It’s not all bad news though. While we can’t stem the tide of evil flooding our world, there is something we can do.

Last Days

March 18, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Are we living in the last days? Judging by the number of videos and articles I see online, you’d have to conclude we must be. Certainly, the days are evil, darker, and more violent than most of us have ever seen in our lifetime. From a Biblical prophecy standpoint, there is nothing else foretold that is yet to be fulfilled. Indeed, much of what is happening in the geopolitical landscape seems to be aligning itself with prophecy.

But generations before ours have thought the same thing. Even the apostles thought Jesus would return during their lifetime (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Whether or not we are living in the last days, our mission remains the same. We are to be using the gifts God has given us to reach others with the Gospel of Christ.

Never Say Amen

December 28, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

We should spend our lives in constant prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Some portions of the Bible can be confusing to understand without deeper study, but most of it is perfectly clear for anyone to understand. This command to “pray constantly” is one of those teachings. There is no way to interpret this command as making sure we have a ten-minute quiet time in the morning, or that we give thanks before a meal.

Those are fine things to practice, but they are only part of what the Bible commands us to do. To pray constantly means we never say amen. All day and every day, we are to be in perpetual communication with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Jesus is Coming Back

November 24, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Perhaps there is nothing greater to be thankful for than the fact Jesus is coming again. In a world full of evil and destruction, we are daily in desperate need of hope. We need a reason to believe things will get better and that this life is not all there is. All these things are fulfilled in the fact Jesus is coming again. Everything we experience here is temporary. One day, we will forget all our troubles, pain, and despair.

If that isn’t a reason to be thankful, I don’t know what is. The day of Christ’s return is coming, of that, we can be certain. I figure, statistically, I’ve got twenty or thirty years left in this world. The Lord may not come back in my lifetime. Or, He may return in the next twenty or thirty seconds; we just don’t know. What we do know is Jesus is coming back. Thank God for that!
