Fear of Dying

The fear of dying is one of the top two fears afflicting people. Some research states it is the most common fear, while other studies place it second behind public speaking. I couldn’t find any concrete numbers detailing what percentage of Christians fear death, but over the years, I have heard more than a few believers express a fear of dying.

That’s a little hard for me to get my head around because true followers of Christ want nothing more than to spend eternity with Him. We can’t do that until we die. To my mind, it is irrational for someone who believes in the resurrection of Jesus to have any fear of dying. We might fear the circumstances that lead to our death, but dying itself should fill us with nothing but hope and joy (1 Corinthians 15:54-57; Philippians 1:21-23).

Thank God for Your Salvation

How often do you thank God for your salvation? If you are like me, it isn’t often enough. Sometimes in prayer, I will get overwhelmed when I think of all the Lord has done on my behalf. All the blessings, all the battles won, all the moments that have no other explanation apart from Him-all of those combined don’t come close to the incredible gift of His salvation.

Where would you be without the love of Christ? Without Him, this life would be meaningless and unbearable. Without Him, we have no hope for the future and no purpose in life (Ephesians 2:11-12). Yet we go through day after day without thanking Him for His priceless and matchless gift (2 Corinthians 9:15).

God Is in Control

When times are uncertain, it’s not uncommon to hear a fellow believer remind you that God is in control. I’ve heard this so many times in my life that it borders on being trite and just something you say to comfort someone. We mustn’t let our brains cast this truth aside in such a trivial way. The fact God is in control is one of the most important things to remember in life.

Most of the world is in chaos, and almost all our lives are chaotic as well. Some days, all the uncertainty makes it difficult to even get out of bed, much less accomplish something for the Kingdom of God. It is in times like these we must remember there is nothing happening in our world that surprises or perplexes God. He is not panicking or wondering what to do (Isaiah 46:9-10).

Who Do You Think You Are?

Who do you think you are? That’s not a recommended conversation starter, but I think it’s a question we should often ask ourselves and others. In a world where everyone wants to create God in their image or deny He exists at all, I think it’s a fair question. Once upon a time, there was a man named Job who suffered almost every loss and calamity imaginable.

Being a God-fearing man, he couldn’t make sense of the logic of it all. He was confident if he could present his case to God, that the Lord would relent and exonerate him from all his sufferings (Job 13:3; Job 23:3-5). God’s response was to ask Job the question we are contemplating today: “Who do you think you are?”

One Life

Don’t waste the one life God has given you to bring glory to His holy name (1 Corinthians 10:31). Life is brief. It is not something that you can grasp, but vanishes like a mist (James 4:14). Like grass that withers after a short time or a flower that wilts soon after reaching the height of its beauty, so is your one life (1 Peter 1:24). It is here today and gone tomorrow.

In his first epistle to the churches, Peter goes to great lengths to instruct us how we should live our lives in a manner pleasing to God and worthy of His glorious name. We have only one life and will do well to heed the wisdom in this letter.
